Describe an idea or application involving ActiveHome

Entry 25: ActiveHome means never entering a dark house again. ActiveHome means never having to get out of bed to turn on or off a light. ActiveHome means turning on all the lights at once if there's a strange noise. ActiveHome means each child can have his/her own personal code and remote control to turn on and off their lights from the bedside. ActiveHome means never having to manually turn on (or off) the exterior lights. ActiveHome means never having to remember to turn off (or on) the Christmas tree lights. ActiveHome means turning on the house lights from the remote control in the car. ActiveHome means setting mood lighting, including dimming, with one stroke on the remote control. ActiveHome means amazing everyone who visits with major cool that is ActiveHome. ActiveHome means safety, convenience, efficiency and peace of mind. -- Steve Kruschen

Entry 34: I am now the proud owner of ActiveHome and many new X10 products. I use ActiveHome to do many things that I had only dreamed of. For example, I am now able to automatically have my air conditioners turn on exactly 1 hour before I get home from work. This saves over 50% on my electric bill and gets the place cool so I don't have to walk into a hot & humid house after a long day at work. I also have a dog (which gets very lonely while I'm at work). I can now turn on the TV or radio at various intervals throughout the day to keep him entertained. I also purchased the phone module which allows me to call and turn anything on or off while I'm away from the house (at work, vacation, or any place!). I love ActiveHome and would be lost without it!  -- Nancy Parker

Entry 51: My life would be so much less stressful if I was able to automate the shutting off of all of the electrical gadgets that my wife and daughter are using on a daily basis. I would implement an "ActiveHome" program that would systematically shut down the electrical outlets in the bathroom (that dad-blasted curling iron), the bedrooms (the closet lights), the utility room (the clothes iron), and the kitchen (the coffee maker). I would repeat the program periodically, approximately every two hours, until the afternoon when I return from work. I am concerned about the safety issues related to appliances left plugged in and hot, and also aware of the ecological cost of power being consumed by same when no one is in the immediate vicinity. I would also implement a security perimeter with motion sensors controlled by the "ActiveHome" software, and actuate a siren, horn, or announcer when the perimeter is violated. Maybe I would have the program actuate a CCTV system to record whatever is visible upon the violation, if that is possible. Last, but not least, I would be interested in some voice-controlled interfacing for thermostat, light level, and possibly volume levels of the TV or stereo. Just a thought. -- Timothy Bingham

Entry 65: In an "ActiveHome" our lifestyle would be greatly enhanced from the utilization of this technology. Our home would be more efficient and safer in many ways. The technology would allow our family to control many parts of our house. Specifically, my parents like the idea of having the power to turn off my TV, lights, and other appliances when my "bedtime" has come and gone. My father would enjoy a fresh, hot cup of coffee the moment he wakes up and goes downstairs. My mother would also love to have the power to turn on her most valuable appliances, the washer and dryer-she would just have to figure out a way to get the clothes in the washer and dryer!! On a serious note, the technology would benefit our safety and our homes efficiency. It would allow us to activate and deactivate our security system. If there are burglars outside, we could also startle them and turn on the outside lights without putting ourselves in danger. Our home would be more energy efficient because we could easily turn off and on appliances that need to be used or don't need to be on!! The "ActiveHome" would have many benefits in our home. It would come in great use for our whole family and allow our house to become safer, more efficient, and fun without many hassles!!! -- Mark Stephens

Entry 89:  ActiveHome would help me in so many ways they are innumerable. In the short space I have let me start with security. By using ActiveHome, I can give the illusion of being home by turning on and off lights in different rooms to simulate the occupancy, therefore thwarting criminals from stealing your precious possessions. This system is a small price to pay for home security. The next wonderful bonus is the energy saving nature of the system, just think having your computer control the time your lights are on and off, in time the energy saved will have this program paying for itself! I would recommend this system to anyone with trouble getting around, this system would allow anyone with limited mobility to turn off lights and appliances accidentally left on, without having to labor across the house to get to them. This system can even save your house say a caretaker of a wheelchair bound man leaves an iron on upstairs, after that caretaker leaves the poor man would be doomed to watch his house burn down. Not with the ActiveHome system, simply turn off the outlet with the X10 system, and his house is saved. There are countless reasons to get the ActiveHome system, and for nothing else, use it to save money with stopping the wasted power! but you don't have to listen to me, I'm sure you can find many of your own reasons that can help you out with the ActiveHome system from X10. --Aaron Brown

Entry 102:  My day would start with the ActiveHome set up to turn up the heat just before the TV turns on to the weather channel to update me on the forecast for the day. Also to check out the stock market quotes that are on CNN/Fn. The coffee maker would be brewing and the lights in the kitchen and bathroom on so the walk will not be semi-fatal. Next the TV would switch off to let me know that I only have 30 minutes left before I need to leave for work. On leaving the alarm would set and Big Dog ready for intruders. The monitored system would watch the house for the day. On our return home the thermostat would be set and heat or air conditioning turned on so the house is at the correct temperature when we arrive home. The outside lights and inside lights would be turned on to light the way, and the alarm system would be deactivated by my remote as we arrive home. That night I could check the e-mail by send video while I wait for dinner or later if I cook the meal. If I am cooking the meal I can use the remote to turn on the stereo for a little mood music. After dinner we could both start watching a movie in the den, and with send video switch to the bedroom so that we can get ready for bed while finishing up the movie. The weekends could have their own settings different from the week day. --Patrick Kennedy

Entry 173:  It's another holiday at my house, lots of guests are milling around, and I would be a nut case if my active home didn't have ActiveHome! Well, I'm the hit of the party, on top of Everything. Let me tell you a few of my secrets...

  1. Thanks to my driveway sensor, I can tell a guest has arrived, and have my security camera turn on and switch output to my TV in the living room, see who it it, and then meet and greet them.
  2. The bathroom is a busy place, so I have a special sensor that lets me know the toilet paper is out - potential problems are averted!
  3. The kids room upstairs is always a favorite, but I must keep them out of the master bedroom - I handle this with a motion sensor, my ActiveHome turns on the lights, and notifies me via my speech enabled computer software.
  4. My ActiveHome allows the patio light sensor can tell when someone is going out the back door, and turn off the lawn sprinkler system, and turn on the lawn lighting.
  5. My rain/snow instruments allow me to keep my guests informed of the actual conditions outside, and by detecting icing conditions, my ActiveHome can even activate my radiant heating in the sidewalk.
  6. Without a doubt, the most beloved feature is when everyone leaves, I can plop down on my bed, press a single button, and all my lights and appliances will be shut off for me. - Good night! :-)
  7. Wow! my alarm system has activated, and my ActiveHome knows all about it, my computer notifies me of the intrusion, and calls the cops for me. I peer out my window as I see the police "persuading" the cat-burglar - lucky for me, my ActiveHome also activated the security camera, and I've got the whole thing on tape! Whatta night! When's the next holiday?

--Lance Latimer.

Entry 196:  My neighbor is a quadriplegic() (paralyzed from the neck down) with extremely limited use of his right arm. ActiveHome software and hardware would make his life much more comfortable and allow him to help himself. He could start his dinner in the microwave before his aid arrives to feed him, he could turn appliances & lights on or off through-out his home using a specialized keypad interface with infrared technology on his wheel chair. His computer has already become adaptable to his needs with mouth-to-mouse sticks and voice dictation software. ActiveHome could automate the rest of his house and further his freedom. ActiveHome would give him a second chance at life by improving his self confidence and renewing his faith through technology. ActiveHome would also increase his safety by 100%, currently he can not lock his doors. With and electronically actuated deadbolt cylinder attached to an ActiveHome system, he could lock doors from his bed or wheel chair with ease. Allowing visitors or emergency personnel entrance without fear of theft. Climate control is large problem for him. He has to call a neighbor to open or close doors and windows, adjust his thermostat or turn on a fan. With ActiveHome he could simply tell the computer what temperature to maintain or to turn on a particular fan. Truly, ActiveHome is the wave of technology that my neighbor requires to enhance his life style, remain safe and accessible in emergencies, and to gain more independence than he already has from his computer. --Brian Sardeson

Entry 197:  I want to tell you about how we have come to love our "ActiveHome" system. You see we have a Very "ACTIVEHOME" of our own. My wife and I have 2 dogs, a cat , bird and fish. I originally purchased this system just to turn my lights on & off for my wife who is disabled and that really helps her having the "ActiveHome" control the lights both off the computer and also with motion sensors. Then I added security to the "ActiveHome" system so my wife feels safer when she comes home and also when she is home alone. But the newest part of our "ActiveHome" system is my best part of our "ActiveHome" system, I now program the "ActiveHome" system to not just control the lights in my fish tank, but now the "ActiveHome" system activates the auto-feeders dry contacts to feed the fish at specific times, and the dogs and cat too. This make my wife’s life much easier. I got this idea because I installed a very large and expensive sound system at the famed "Pier 39" in San Francisco, I needed to activate a pair of dry contacts that start the tape player at very specific times to make specific announcements all day and night. I purchased an "ActiveHome" system and programmed the "cp290" interface on the laptop. Once a month Pier 39 makes a new announcement tape and I go up and reprogram the "ActiveHome" system so all the announcements come out at the right time. That is how I got the Idea to set off the Auto feeder with our "ActiveHome" system. So besides writing this story for the "ActiveHome" Contest, this is more of a thank you from my wife and I. Very sincerely --Kip and Mary Elizabeth Hyams

Entry 223:  This is a true story! I live on Lake Travis just outside of Austin, Texas. Our boat dock has been burglarized twice in the past five years, including our jetski being stolen. I had thought about installing a burglar alarm down there, but who would hear, as the dock is about 600 feet from the house. About two months ago, I ordered the larger ActiveHome system. I started playing with it, and came across a really nice application for it to simultaneously protect my boat dock, and provide safety as well.

After playing in the house with ActiveHome, I did not want to let it go, so I ordered another one. This was ordered for the boat dock. I installed the motion sensor on a metal beam overlooking the boat area, and the RF receiver in a weatherproof plastic box. I installed the computer interface in the house near my other one, with a switch box to switch between the two.

The ActiveHome dock system runs several macros. The motion sensor macro is set to turn on all of the dock lights, AS WELL AS ALL OF MY BEDROOM LIGHTS, and the rear porch lights of the house. This macro has an automatic off function of two hours, as I want the lights to remain on until I figure out what is going on.

I also have a macro running from the little keychain remote that I keep in the boat. At night, it can be really dangerous to come into the dock by water, especially when there is no moonlight. I use the keychain remote to turn on the dock lights. They will turn themselves back off after 30 minutes. That is plenty of time to get stuff together and get in the golf cart for the trip up the hill to the house.

Anyway, amazingly, Tuesday of last week (8/4), the lights in the bedroom came on at about 3 am. I looked outside, and the dock lights were ON!! I also saw two people struggling to get back in their boat!!! I was about to be ripped off again, no doubt. While I no longer own a jet ski, I still have a lot of money invested in equipment at the dock. In my opinion, the ActiveHome system more than paid for itself, just from that one incident. I still have many more ideas for other uses of ActiveHome. I want another system! I love it!! --Kent Farnsworth

Entry 234:  Used Active home to create scene for a Halloween Party. Prerecorded on tape recorders witch story lines and evil sorcerer story lines. Connected slide projector with Disney Haunted House scene to Appliance Unit. Connected red and green spot lamps, strobe lights, and fish tank airaiter to create bubbles with egg squash (looked like brain) that would possess people as they walked in room detected with IR module. Timed all events with Active home. --Richard Zielinski

Entry 247:  I work late hours and use active home to turn on outside lights to illuminate my entry way and door. I also use it to turn a tea pot in the morning so my tea is properly steeped when I come down stairs for breakfast. My wife had me put an automatic lamp module that turns on at dusk and goes off at 10:00, it reminds us and the children that it is bedtime. I am designing an irrigation system for our sprinklers which currently is on a dedicated timer controller which is very unfriendly to program. Our hallway lights on using a macro that when activated turn on the hall lights for 15 minutes - enough time for the children to get to their rooms and turn on their lights. We have a very nice Honeywell programmable controller for our HVAC, when it break we plan to go to an X10 solution. Of course this is only the beginning. I will be replacing all the switches with X10 devices and automated shutoff, between me and the kids we just cant seem to turn off the lights. :-)! --Eugene Beckett

Entry 253: It's been a bloody hot summer here in Dallas in 1998. My ActiveHome system helped us avoid a complete disaster when we went away for vacation. The story begins with us raising the thermostat to save a bit of energy. We have an outside beer tap system that is cooled from a beer fridge inside the house. As we were leaving it occurred me that the beer would loose its freshness if the inside got too warm and the cheap beer fridge didn't have a sophisticated thermostat. So I hacked a X10 powerhouse - sent a few commands to my ActiveHome computer unit and created a device that would cycle the beer fridge when the fridge temp went over 45 degrees. After 10 hours in the car, the wife and I were ready for a cold one when we walked in the house. Over to the taps we went and sure enough - ActiveHome had saved the day! --Ted Gurley

Entry 275:  Our vacation to Colorado was almost canceled because my family did not want to leave the Cats home alone. Active Home came to the rescue and our vacation was saved. I convinced the girls that we could see the cats on the internet from Colorado. I used the Active Home interface a MS12a motion sensor and a little VB program and "viola" we had "My cat on the web". I used the motion detector to trigger a event that ran a VB program that took a video snap and uploaded it to my net account.  The vacation was saved and the CAT CAM was born! -- Gerard Kelly

Entry 282:  Out front door is stained glass. There is no viewer. When you press the lighted front doorbell, the transformer triggers a series of X10 events. The first event slowly raises the lighting level on two fixtures on either side of the door. An immediate second event similarly raises the lighting level on recessed ceiling fixtures across the porch. The family room television turns (instant) on (if off) and is switched (IR control) to the assigned video channel for the front door video feed. Three chimes sound in the master hallway to alert you of visitors. If we're not home, no lights or TV responses, but ReX barks from the area underneath the foyer stairway. All except for the alarm tap are X10-based off-the-shelf components. The alarm tap is an AMP OnQ. A similar sequence works for the rear door button, except that the family room TV is not used and the master bedroom TV is used. -- Byron Peebles

Entry 288:  I have to say ever since I purchased my ActiveHome Kit from X10 I am now in control of my house instead of my house in control of me! There is no need to chase all over the house to see what lights my kids left on, with my super remote in hand I can shut all the lights without leaving my comfortable chair, with just one button. This remote is so flexible that it not only controls x10 products but most TV's Stereo's VCR's well you get the picture. The great thing is if I happen to fall asleep my ActiveHome does not. That is when the CM11A comes in and saves the day with its built in timer it shuts everything off every night at my specified time so I can sleep in peace knowing the house is always monitored. -- Dino Sangiuliano

Entry 292: I want to tell you about how we have come to love our "ActiveHome" system. Entry 299: It was a stormy evening as I pulled neared my house. Lighting storms had been punishing the area for over an hour. As I turned onto my driveway, I could see nothing but the drops pelting my windshield. I quickly pressed my X10 and activated the outdoor lights. Much to my surprise, a huge pine tree had fallen across my driveway. "Had it not been for ActiveHome, I would've really messed up my car" I thought to myself.  Seeing that I had no chose but to make a dash for it, I activated my ActiveHomes inside lights and the heater inside the house. I open the door of the car and start to run. Luckily I see a rattlesnake that has been flooded out of its home from the rain. Again I think to myself "Had it not been for ActiveHome, I could be dead." I jump over the snake and dash under my covered porch. I open the door, and feel the warm air sooth my wet, cold and frightened body. "I'm so happy I bought this ActiveHome thing" I think to myself. -- Jorge Barrera

Entry 322:  I have used my activehome to help track the U.S Space Shuttle while docked to the Soviet MIR station via Amateur (HAM) radio to have a taped conversation between myself and astronaut John Blau. Using simple activehome AC outlet switches and some mechanical relays activehome gave me the extra helping hands to mechanicly gain azimuth and elevation for my home made antenna to have this voice conversation from space. Guess activehome helped me make that E.T. connection, and John Blau phone home! (True Story) -- Bill Porter

Entry 22: I am using X10 products for almost five years. Once ActiveHome became available I immediately upgraded and I am happy since. Our ActiveHome controls virtually our entire house. House is lighted depending on automatic light sensor (X10 Sundowner) and heated as well. When I wake up my coffee is already brewed and drapes are pulled open. The fountain and waterfall pumps are turned on by their appliance modules.  In order to keep my pool clean and save energy, pump is running just on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for three hours. The appliance module turns on separate small pump which circulates the water through solar collectors as long as sun shines (in winter x10 turns on gas heater). Five appliance modules sprinkles my lawn during the day. Once the Sun sets, the garden lights and aquarium lights are turned on . When I feel to watch a movie I just press one button. The home theater macro turns the system on, closes the drapes and dims all the lights mimicking real theater-like experience. At bedtime system turns all the lights off, in winter it even prewarms my bed for an hour (I do not want to sleep on powered electrical mattress pad). Just in case I forgot to turn off any of my appliances another macro turns them off for me. There are only two things which I would like to add in future: 1) I am sick and tired of having to remember to turn our home alarm on every night and off in the morning. It is annoying when I forgot and open the entry door before disarming the system. I want my Active Home to control DS7000 Home Alarm system as well. 2) It would be nice to be able to get rid of all the remote controls and use speech command control. I have yet to experiment with it since there are already some products compatible with X10. If I feel so I just press another button and turn my wife on. It’s not bad at all! -- George Tuma

Entry 324: Getting started in the morning is a major task. I would set the system up on a timer so that it would boot up at 5:00am, and start the home routine for me. First it would turn on the lights in the bedroom along with the radio, waking me up. Then while I was showering, the system would turn on the coffee maker, so that when I was done the coffee would be also. It would then turn on the lights I would need for getting ready for work. While I was out, the system would monitor the home security for me. This would be tied into an automated system that would call the police with a recorded voice message as well as call me on the phone advising me of any possible break-in or fire. The system would then turn on the lights for me ten minutes before I was due to come home. In the winter it would control the heating, lowering it   while I was at work, and raising it a half hour prior to my returning, saving on the heating bills. The system would also turn on the micro wave to cook my dinner so that it would be ready for me when I walked into the house. The television would also be preset to come on when I walk in showing the news of the day. I would have the system take control of the lighting should I go out for the evening, again monitoring the security ready to call my pager incase of trouble. Returning home the house would be under the control of  the system until going to bed. It would set the lighting to turn off after I went to bed, controlling the music system to gently put me to sleep. Given a 40 minute playing time and then shut down the music. The system would then go into sleep mode, maintaining the security of the house while the rest of the system went to standby mode, ready to repeat the whole process the next day. -- Robert Schweiger

Entry 355: I use the Radio Shack Home Control Center which is close to the ActiveHome system and seems to fully compatible because I use real X10 modules with it as well as two X10 timers and many control pads, both plug in and wireless. I run several computers at home connected in a LAN with Novell server as a base. All of my computers are powered through the modules, which allows my den system to control the power of all the systems as well as my lights and appliances. The virtual wiring makes the whole setup possible by allowing specific power-up sequences, timed as I need, with a single push of a button. Using one of the older burglar alarm interfaces, I have the basic system power up automatically when I enter my den. There are many other things that I automate, though I haven't found the method of a remote computer on the network to send commands to the ActiveHome system on the DEN system. This would open up unlimited possibilities, however the complexity of the system would be beyond the average persons ability to setup. Originally, my wife hated all the pads and modules that I plugged in, but as she started using it, she fell in love with the capabilities. My wireless alarm system (Also X10 compatible) makes the entire house remote possible from a security point of view by allowing the "Light Flash" when the alarm is triggered to also trip a ActiveHome Macro. This powers up the required computers as well as other unmentioned (Handmade) devices to alert me wherever I may be. I even have tied motion detectors to several macros to allow automatic "lights on" commands that light areas only when they are in use. Only trouble I have ever had with that is whatever timeout I set must be manually reset by hitting a button on the pad for that area. Without the Macro capability, none of these options are possible. The unit I use "stacks" commands, so the Turn Lights on executes right after the timeout. One little flash of the lights is easy to live with.  -- Arthur Clark

Entry 375: My "Active Home" system is just the solution for my active lifestyle, despite the fact that I will be 75 on the first of March, this year. I wake up a 5 AM with my favorite radio station turned on by X10, work out a bit with my weights and jump into my spa that has begun to heat itself at 3:30 by the same system.  I don't worry about intruders in my backyard, as the alarm light goes on if anybody ever enters the secluded area around my pool, which has filtered itself since 1 a.m. Then, I have my breakfast with coffee that is waiting for me, and you know why, as is the living room that is nice and cool, thanks to the air controls system which exchanges fresh air all through the night, without wasting hydro during the day. In other words, my entire home and life is assisted by my X10, which relieves me of the problems I would encounter due to the reduced short time memory that begins to effect anything that is not monitored by X10. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone that is as frugal as I am, and is past the age of childhood. -- Joe Messner

Entry 378:  I use ActiveHome, should be called automatic home, every minute of everyday. Our home is automatic from the time we arrive home in the evening our outside lights come on at dusk, our inside lights turn on and off randomly while we are gone at night to appear that someone is home. When we enter our home a motion sensor detects our presence and lights our way. the a/c or heat depending on season is already been set, through our ActiveHome of course. At bedtime the ActiveHome performs a goodnight macro which lights the path to our respective bedrooms setting temps on thermostats and turning two of them off. then it begins turning all lights off except for my daughters which gets dimmed for an extra 30 minutes before it is turned off. Keeps the boogeyman away. Then at midnight active home begins the irrigation process of our lovely estate. in the morning one hour prior to wakeup time it sets the bedroom thermostats to desired temps, it then wakes us up at preset times depending on what day it is of course by turning on our bedroom lights. when we leave it performs an all off command turning all bathroom exhaust fans off, my wife's curling iron off, thermostats off and all lights off and sets the alarm. We have a six thousand square foot home and our electrical bill has been kept so low that Edison has performed an on site audit. We attribute the huge savings all to our ActiveHome system which keeps lights and appliances especially a/c units off when we are gone.  -- Ron Nuckles

Entry 446: I finally made it! I'd built the home of my dreams. Realizing how long it had taken to achieve this dream, I figured I might as well take it to the limits. I installed ActiveHome software from X10, along with security monitoring from ORCA, and now, I am so glad that I did. We had gone on vacation, and without ActiveHome, I'm not sure if ANY of our possessions would still be "in our possession". Amber and I were standing in a casino in Vegas when my cellular phone went off. It was my "Protector Plus" Security System calling me to let me know something was up at home. I immediately called ORCA Home Security, the security monitoring company we enlisted to protect our home. They had already responded and we sending the Police to the scene. By the time I had reached the officers on the scene, they had the criminal in custody. He kept talking how no matter where around the house he went to effect his break in, lights were coming on. The officer on the scene was also asking me about "Cinder", my Labrador Retriever. I told him that "Cinder" was at a Kenneling Service while we were on vacation. He told me that there was a Dog barking inside the house, and I informed him that it was only part of my "Protector Plus" system from X10, and that it would stop momentarily. In fact, I ended up giving him the web address (http://www.x10.com) for X10, and he said he was going to purchase the same setup for his mother who lived alone. I told him all about all of the other services that X10 and ORCA provide for people who prefer to live independently in their advancing years. Amber and I enjoyed the rest of our Vacation with confidence that no matter what, we were in good hands as far as security was concerned. I just wish our luck in Las Vegas was as good as our luck at home had been. Well, I guess it wasn't really luck, it was superior technology, excellent service, and a fantastic network of Security Professionals. I guess NOT having the ActiveHome System with ORCA monitoring WOULD have been "living on luck". Well, I can smell the coffee brewing in the kitchen (I love this ActiveHome Setup!), so I guess it's time to start another great day. I only wish that I could write a good ActiveHome macro to build the perfect Denver Omelet. -- Keith Personett

Entry 467:  I thought that I was dreaming. There I was in my living room and the lights turned on as I entered the room. It was like an invisible robot was reading my mind and taking care of all of my needs. The music that seemed to flow down from heaven, entered my consciousness quietly and soothingly as my CD player turned on by itself. I thought it was a miracle until I awoke and realized that it was all a dream. Or was it? Get ActiveHome and find out for yourself. -- Jan Griffin
